2021-2022 Lecture Series

The C.F. Reynolds Medical History Society is pleased to announce its 38th lecture season (2021-2022). We thank the University of Pittsburgh Center for Bioethics and Health Law for its generous support.

September 28, 2021 ~ "The Love Surgeon: A Story of Trust, Harm, and Stock Assumptions," Sarah Rodriguez, PhD (Global Health Studies, Northwestern University)

An expert on women's reproductive and sexuality in history and contemporaneously, Dr. Rodriguez will discuss Dr. James Burt, the controversial obstetrician/gynecologist.

Dr. Rodriguez is celebrating the publication of her book, The Love Surgeon: A Story of Trust, Harm, and the Limits of Medical Regulation (Rutgers, 2020).

November 9, 2021 ~ Sylvan E. Stool Memorial Lecture ~ "The Unsung Heroes of the Match," Bryan Carmody, MD (Pediatric Nephrology, Children's Hospital of The King's Daughters)

Dr. Carmody is best known for blogging as "the Sheriff of Sodium," where he has accumulated a wealth of knowledge about structures and trends in medical training. We regret being unable to host our annual banquet after this talk due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

January 25, 2022 ~ "Roentgen and Hounsfield: Two Non-Physicians Who Revolutionized Medicine," Richard H. Daffner, MD (Radiology, Allegheny General Hospital)

After a full career as a practicing radiologist, Dr. Daffner has turned toward medical history in retirement. We will conduct our Annual Business Meeting just before Dr. Daffner's lecture about Wilhelm Roentgen, Godfrey Hounsfield, and the history of cross-sectional imaging.

February 22, 2022 ~ "Negotiating Normalcy: Deafness Cures in American History," Jaipreet Virdi, PhD (History, University of Delaware)

Dr. Viridi will give the annual Reynolds Society Grand Rounds for the University of Pittsburgh Department of Medicine at noon on the same day, and a different talk (named above) that evening. She is a specialist in the history of medicine, disability studies, and the history of technologies such as hearing aids.
Dr. Virdi is celebrating the publication of Hearing Happiness: Deafness Cures in History (University of Chicago, 2020).

April 5, 2022 ~ Annual Ravitch Lecture ~ "Journey to Medicine," William Simmons, MD (Anesthesiology and Perioperative Medicine, University of Pittsburgh)

Associate Professor and Diversity Director for Anesthesiology and Perioperative Medicine at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine, Dr. Simmons will describe his history-making life and career, from being the first in his family to attend college to excelling as one of the few Black physicians in his chosen fields of pediatrics and anesthesiology to giving back as a community leader in Pittsburgh.

PANDEMIC ACCOMMODATIONS: Out of an abundance of caution, all lectures will be live-stream only via Zoom. These sessions will be hosted by the Community College of Allegheny County (CCAC). You do not need a special account or application to join the live stream, which will continue to be free. The easiest way to get both the link and the password is to join our mailing list. The lectures will start at 6pm Eastern Time and last for 45-50 minutes, with a short period of questions and answers afterward. If the speaker agrees, the event will be recorded and shared via our website and to the membership email list.

YOUR SUPPORT IS APPRECIATED: Annual membership dues are $10 for trainees and $25 for everyone else. They can be paid online (see column at right) or via postal mail to Treasurer Adam Davis (send an email to cfreynoldsmhs@gmail.com for the address).
